Investigators at the Mayo Clinic have used a human vaccine to cure prostate tumors in mice.
According to what the researchers said, this vaccine encourages the immune system to get rid of the tumors itself, without the need of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. This new model gives hope for people who might, in the future, live tumor free with a lot fewer side effects than those that chemotherapy and radiation treatments imply. “We are hopeful that this will overcome some of the major hurdles which we have seen with immunotherapy cancer research,” says Richard Vile, Ph.D., Mayo Clinic immunologist, Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Professor and a lead author of the study. According to him, the clinical trials for such a thing could begin in the next two years. Mayo Clinic is very famous for the fact that they show great promise in treating skin cancer and prostate cancer, among other things. They are concerned with treating more aggressive types of cancer and their research team is constantly working to improve their methods of doing so.
This new study they made showed that there was no trace of autoimmune diseases in the mice used and also that the murine T-cells only attacked the cancerous prostate cells, leaving the healthy ones alone. This is not the first time the researchers at the Mayo Clinic try to vaccinate mice against prostate cancer or any other type of cancer, for that matter. However, until now, they could not solve anything, because they could not isolate a sufficiently diverse and robust collection of antigens in tumor cells. This is the main reason for which, before, tumor cells were able to relocate and develop themselves elsewhere, not taking into account the body’s immune system. The researchers said that they would continue their studies on the matter and hopefully, in two years time, they will be able to test their findings on humans. The fight against cancer has been given for many years and until now, nothing showed as much promise as these studies. Cancer kills millions of people worldwide, annually and there are many researchers who are currently trying to find cures for some, if not all, types of cancer that lead to the death of so many people each year.
